I like music since I saw a BBC footage of The Musical Box by Genesis, when I was 10 (1974). It changed my life. I realize I could not live without music like that. The 70´s and 80´s both had reactions to funerals of progressive rock, punk and disco. They were revolutions as far as music became predictable, lazy and mostly “commercial”. I was losing faith in my lifelong affection and passion, so I focused in medical research, my primary work. On September 19 of 2005 I was attending one of the collaborations my Hospital had with the University of Toronto. However, I missed the official supper and decided to go around downtown, which is always fruitful in Toronto. I never imagined that I was going to encounter one of my major experiences in music, only comparable with last Peter Gabriel´s tour “Growing Up” and the impressive “The Wall” by Roger Waters.

This was different. I knew a little about Sigur Ros, all derived from () and some videos, which were as artistic as provocative, revealing and beautiful. Human, after all. So I get into the Massey Hall with some expectations but would not regret a fail. I still remember the sound of the bass, the look of Orri and the marching background which collapsed into the figure of this man playing the guitar with an arch and a unique voice. Glósóli. I had not listen to Takk before and they played the whole thing that night. Perfection. Minimalism. Belleza.

All senses occupied by the most important musical performance I had in years. I did not understand a word from Jonsi, but I soon realized that that would not be necessary to weight the quality of their work. No words from Jonsi or any of the members of the band. They knew that contact was trough the new music we were all witnessing.. I am good at forgetting things. I remember every minute of that night. Somehow it was the first time I was in the presence of the last revolution in rock. A musical secret which I could speak about in Chile. But Sigur Ros was not longer a hidden treasure. Young people use Hoppipolla as an anthem. It was their way of claiming for equity and minority civil rights. They had already translated some of their songs or dream awaken about others. I guess () makes every song taking all possible trajectories to the heart of people, where is written differently by millions. I was the only stupid guy requesting otherwise.

Sigur Ros came to our souls as music, a very special one. The bella and unique voice of someone which we dont´t understand, but we feel he is saying what people want for their life. To rescue beauty and melancholy -that of our children, our patients with trisomy 21, our playful parents, our suffering planet- and sing a song which most powerful message is built-up in itself. Ready to be opened by everyone.

    Takk Sigur Ros.
For changing the life of so many, becoming an example of how happiness may be found in the harmonic, alternative and belleza de tus obras de arte.
