i don’t know where to start….. if there’s one thing you do before you die then see both of these bands in concert. theres no amount of superlatives that can do justice to last nights gig (although stunning and hauntingly beautiful might give you an idea). the evening started off well, the royal festival hall is by far and away the most luxurious venue i have ever been to. it suited godspeed perfectly. they’d managed to sell it out which was (i thought) very impressive given the size of the venue.
anyway, at 7.30 when the doors should have opened, we got an announcement over the tannoy saying something like ‘unfortunately we have got some problems getting godspeed to the venue tonight, their ferry from ireland was cancelled this morning. they are nearly here and we’re confident tonights performance will go ahead. however, fly pan am will now not be appearing, and sigur rós will now be opening the show, etc etc.’

so this was a bit annoying as i was looking forward to fly pan am. anyhow, fast forward 2 hours and sigur rós still hadnt taken stage. they eventually came on at about 9.45. well…..it was worth the wait. in fact it was worth the whole ticket, journey, everything just for what we were treated to. i think they played two new songs, along with svefn-g-englar and ný batterí. when jonsi started singing i felt like crying. i could see tears in several peoples eyes. it was the most beautiful thing i’ve ever heard. they had the audience totally captivated throughout.

then, finally at about 10.30, gybe finally came to the stage. they began with one of the drummers reading an introduction from a bit of paper and dedicating the show to loads of people. then they started, and it was absolutely mesmerising. the played for about 90mins and ended with a totally stunning rendition of bbf3, which was probably the most impressive thing i’ve ever seen in my life. so, it finished at midnight leaving us a frantic sprint over the river and to the tube station and we got the last train home at half twelve. it even snowed on the way home, believe it or not. eventually got home tired and dazed at half two.

well everyone should get a chance to experience these bands at some point. you cant put it into words…..as mogwai once said, ‘music is bigger than words and wider than pictures’. that couldnt have been more true last night.
