***

this is both a sublime concert film and a credible rescue job on a rock band who were in danger of becoming champions of easy listening music. the icelandic foursome sigur rós, once found on trailers for planet earth and sky sports, are reinvented as musical savants and thoughtful rockers as they play a series of free concerts in their native iceland. ravishing landscape cinematography is intercut with band interviews and devastating live footage. in these cathartic scenes, where epic slow-burning tracks such as staralfur are given full vent, sigur ros occasionally reach a transcendent grandeur.
