i had a chance to see a fine group of musicians from iceland called "sigur rós".
the musicians maintained a balanced mix of sounds from a number of instruments. the
music also came from the souls of the musicians. when someone plays or sings from
their soul, they strike a conviction that will not be broken by any force in the entire
universe.
the music swelled with the sounds of sheer bliss as the musicians resurrected the colorful chords that i am used to hearing by the cocteau twins. siggi ármann opened up for the band. he played a few songs that reminded me of the blue nile, and then later he cleverly sang a melody around a broken major major 7th. the set was very calming and coherent. this was a nice opening for sigur rós.
sigur rós played a song near the end of the show that reminded me quite a bit of the more dissonant and clever chord progressions on the albums garlands and the pink opaque. nobody plagiarized anyone though. the sound and style of all the songs were quite original. sigur rós has a sound that will always be original and very ethereal. this is due in part because of the way that the lead vocalist sings. the other explanation for such an original sound is because of how they layer the instruments with the vocals. sometimes the resonance of the vocals would line up right with some of the other instruments and then drift around them. this created a very lifelike yet surreal atmosphere.
it is nice to know that there is a strong ethereal scene; both in iceland and here
in the metro-detroit area.
