well ive seen sigur rós. finally.
i've been trying to think of a words to use to put my feelings across but that was just mission: impossible, believe i have tried hard to convey the images that i see in my mind. it was just dream like. i could see an aura just coming off the band, the mist, the atmosphere.
simply outstanding. doesn't even seem to do it justice...
i wish i didn't say that because it's become a tired old cliché but there's a reason. sigur ros -are- special. they sound like -how i would imagine iceland sound like.......
i saw them at the gem theatre in detroit on the first date of the tour. ( firstly, i have to also second and third the thoughts of charlotte and james, that they made the dates and respected their commitments to slog out the shows. there was a moment where i was really worried - sorry that sounds really selfish, but i have been waiting months in advance to see them play the shows and then a couple of weeks early, all hell breaks lose.) they avoided any troubles with the airlines in getting here thankfully and started the tour where expected.
i must also add that i was hugely impressed with the support band from ca i think- album leaf. i always thought that leaf was the name of their album ( slow witted ) but i found out from a very informative person their whole history, and releases! they played for around 30-40 minutes and i'm sure will gain a lot of attention and word of mouth publicity from fellow sigur fans on such boards as these. really tonal, soothing music. different from sigur but not such a drastic leap. i will definitely be checking them out in the future. i couldn't tell the set list from the top of my head, i'm sure some one has posted it earlier but they played a beautiful rendition of nýja lagið which is far becoming my favourite song. it would be cool if they could record this for the next album, but i wouldn;t mind. the mp3 i have from the icelandic opera house gig is good enough. also played was lagið í gær which was brilliant. it starts with this hypnotic key board intro and bursts into this snaring drum beat and bass. jonsi -who i dont think opened his eyes once in the gig...very sweet- was playing the bow really aggressively in that song. they also played the piano segement which i'm not sure will appear on the next album. it sound like a graceful band jam, but what a jam!! i've read people mention this before but i only understood when i saw it. jonsi sits down, georg plays xlyophone and orri drummeer gets up from his drum stool and plays keyboards. i was speechless. oohh and there was this part in the show where some middle of the road radio station could be heard during one of the quiet parts of the song after l í g, i think. kjarten was looking around, and i think i could see a smile on goggi. they found the root of the cause on one of the amp/speakers. they ended with svefn- g- englar which was greeted with the delight from the crowd. i always expected that his voice would fault in the chorus "étjuuuu". it was impeccable. never out of tune somehow. death song was followed by the performance of the evening which was pop song. people were just standing in awe, wondering if they deserved to be witnessing such an inspirational song. i will never forget when those drums just crash in a frenzy in the long long long build up. jonsi cooing over kjartens thrashing guitars. watching it, i honestly felt out of breathe.
glad i could hear the full length of these songs in all their glory after surviving on 2 minute clips before that then. i'd be interested to whether any one bootlegged the shows too. did ne one record-tape the show?
also the idea of a back drop was great. some of images were poetic, and some were
just poigniant. really complimented, hand in hand with the music.

hello. i was at the show last night and thought it was great. this was the third time
that i have seen them and the first without a string section. i thought that the overall
sound suffered a bit without the strings, but the songs still sounded great for what
they were.
i thought that there was a big hole where hafssol should have been. it may not have sounded as good without strings, though. as i was sitting on the main floor at table e3 i was looking around and wondering how many of you i was looking at without knowing. it was unfortunate that the monitor was picking up some smoothy r&b station for the first 6 or so songs. it made the band and audience laugh quite a bit. also, during nyja lagid, during one of the pauses in the song, the audience started clapping (thinking the song was finished) as the band continued on with the song. jonsi smiled and chuckled and almost blew his line, but regained composure.
highlights of the show were daudalagid, popplagid (which continually amaze live), samskipti was beautiful and alafoss was strong. it has a such a heavy beginning. lagid i gaer was very nice as well. kjarten's vocals sounded nice in that one.
anyway, i'm about out of things to say. hopefully i didn't bore you too much. the
gem theatre was a fantastic place to see them play. very small and intimate and ornate.
they played for about 1hr 40 minutes. the album leaf was great as well. i'm all done
now. good bye.
